Sol Bamba, former Premier League star and international player, is dead

Former Ivory Coast international Sol Bamba has died. He last coached Adanaspor and died from the effects of cancer.

Manisa/Adana (Türkiye) – A few days ago he mourned Instagram nor about his former coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson (†76)now a former football-National player himself has died. Sol Bamba (39), who played for the Ivory Coast and in the English Premier League, is dead.

The sad news came from his club, Adanaspor from Turkey. Bamba had only been training the team for a few weeks.

“Our coach Souleymane Bamba, who fell ill before yesterday’s Manisa Football Club match, was taken to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital and unfortunately lost his fight for life there. Our condolences go out to our community, especially his family,” the Turkish club wrote on X.

Bamba has been battling cancer since 2021, which was discovered during his time as a Cardiff City player. His wife explained on Instagram that he was never able to fully overcome the insidious disease and has now died from its consequences.

“Over the last few years, I have watched Sol battle his cancer with amazing mental and physical strength and stoicism. Unfortunately, it has never been a fairer fight and just when things were looking up, he suffered a setback and finally succumbed on August 31,” wrote Chloë Bamba.

In addition to his wife, her husband leaves behind three daughters and a son.

“I have had my worst days, but also some of my best. Sol accepted his fate as God’s will and left this earth knowing that he was loved with all his heart, without a shadow of a doubt. I made sure of that,” she says movingly.

Despite the incident, the match was played in Turkey and ended 0-0. Manisa’s field included German Kwasi Wriedt (30), who played in Germany for FC Bayern II, Holstein Kiel and VfL Osnabrück.

After the news of his death, the wave of condolences gained momentum.

“As a player and a manager, Sol had an immeasurable impact on our football club. He was a hero to us all, a leader in every dressing room and a true gentleman,” Cardiff City wrote on X.

Bamba was born in France and trained as a footballer at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The central defender later played in Turkey for Trabzonspor, in Italy for Palermo and in England for Leeds United, Cardiff City and Middlesbrough FC, where he finally ended his career in 2022.

The 1.90-metre-tall man played 46 games for the Ivory Coast and scored one goal. He made 239 appearances in the first two English leagues.
