Two men burned a rainbow flag and the event team in Burgdorf. The police are investigating and looking for witnesses.

Hanover – In the run-up to Christopher Street Day in Burgdorf, an incident occurred that has now led to police investigations for incitement and threats. On the night of Saturday, August 31, two as yet unidentified people tore down a rainbow flag that was hoisted at the town hall and set it on fire, according to the police report. It was only when a 44-year-old member of the organizing team threatened to fight back that the two men fled. The police are now asking for information from the public.

Investigations into anti-queer attack in Burgdorf

According to the investigations carried out so far by the Hanover Criminal Police, the organizers of Christopher Street Day in Burgdorf had gathered on Spittaplatz to make preparations for the event taking place on Saturday. Among other things, they were busy setting up and securing stage parts and technology. A number of Pride events are taking place these days, such as at the end of July, when the very first CSD was celebrated in Verden.

At around 1:15 a.m. on Saturday morning, two men appeared who initially expressed hostility towards the LGBTQ+ community. After a short absence, they returned and tore down the rainbow flag at the town hall, then set it on fire. In this situation, the 44-year-old team member threatened the two men, whereupon they fled.

Christopher Street Day in Burgdorf: Police seek witnesses to incitement

The police have now begun investigations against the two unknown men on suspicion of incitement. At the same time, the 44-year-old team member is being investigated for threats. The two suspects are estimated to be between 25 and 30 years old. One of the men had short, dark hair and a dark complexion, while the other had short, blonde hair and blue eyes. Both were wearing tracksuits.

The Hanover police are asking witnesses who can provide information about the incident or the unknown perpetrators to contact the Criminal Investigation Department on the telephone number 0511 109-5555 to report.
