I had a date with a trash can at gamescom and I don’t regret anything

I don't know either...

I don’t know either…

If someone had told me in advance that my best gamescom experience would involve flirting with a garbage can and a candlestick, I would probably have believed them. I make no secret of the fact that my heart sometimes beats for the games that most people don’t even bother to look at.

But I never thought that my trash can talk would inspire me so much. Even though I was excitedly telling everyone who wanted to know (and even those who didn’t) about this event before gamescom, I didn’t expect to be even more excited after the event. And that was despite the fact that only a few minutes of play and a developer talk had passed between then and now.

Have I made you curious enough that you don’t immediately flee the virtual room when I mention the game title? Yes. I’m talking about Date Everything.

Marylin Marx

Mary has already flirted with refrigerators and weapons and finds in the dating sim genre exactly what she misses in other games: fantastically written characters, great developments and a lot of humor.

Like Pokémon… with voices from Mass Effect and Final Fantasy

In Date Everything, the name says it all. You find yourself in a house, put on magic glasses and suddenly you can have conversations with your garbage can, your chair or the toilet.

There are over 100 characters that you can find. Not all of them are objects. In the interview, the developer tells me that we can also get involved with our existential fear:

Each of the characters is voiced entirely in English – and at a professional level. Voice actor heavyweights like Laura Bailey (Critical Role, Mass Effect, Spider-Man) or Ben Starr (Final Fantasy 16) also have a board.

To ensure that you don’t lose track of so many characters, the game also has a kind of Pokédex that keeps track of every encounter for you. There are also hints, sometimes more and sometimes less obvious, about where to find undiscovered objects and people to talk to.

Date Everything: The name says it all

Not just for the ears

In the short time that I was able to play Date Everything during gamescom, I noticed three other things besides the fantastic synchronization:

  • The character designs are beautiful and harmonious
  • The humor is crazy
  • The dialogues are well written

Here you can see the speaker and the appearance of my new favorite trash can called Trash Cam:

The dialogues are what I personally find most exciting and fascinating about dating sims. In Date Everything, the individual dialogues combined with the voice-over are an absolute highlight.

In a conversation with the developer, I also learned that all the characters tell their own story. Of course, some of their stories and developments are longer than others. Ultimately, I can become friends with each and every one of them, flirt with them, or fall out so badly that we become enemies. Of course, not only silly topics are covered, but dark topics of conversation are also brought to the table.

My buddy Trash Cam is said to have a very exciting, deep story, but the developer on site didn’t want to tell me much about it. In my first conversation with Cam, however, he seemed very dismissive. Is there an Enemies to Lovers story hidden here?

I haven’t been able to test how far the flirt option goes. The USK seal of approval from approved from 16However, what was displayed on the official stand at the exhibition center gives me hope(?) that things are either heating up here or that the topics are darker than the humorous facade initially suggests.

Either way: Date Everything hides a lot of exciting things behind its silly facade. Even if you look at your household with… different eyes afterwards.
