Our daily dose of social media: Tsitsipas’ furious racket smash stuns Badosa, Serena Williams watches Sinner’s win

In today’s dose of social media, we look back at the most important activities and conversations of ATP and WTA players. Stefanos Tsitsipas erupted in anger during his mixed doubles matches, to the surprise of his girlfriend Paula Badosa. The Greek slammed his racket on the ground, and the Spaniard’s startled reaction was visible after the loud impact.

The US Open had a special guest today as Serena Williams attended the match between Jannik Sinner and Christopher O’Connell. On the other hand, Nick Kyrgios praised a heartwarming moment between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton, while Danielle Collins shared a video from her days off.

Mixed doubles drama: Tsitsipas’ racket smash surprised Badosa

Stefanos Tsitsipas had an outburst during his mixed doubles match with his girlfriend Paula Badosa. The former world number 3 smashed his racket, much to his girlfriend’s surprise. The pair faced Mexican doubles specialists Giuliana Olmos and Santiago Gonzalez in the first round of the mixed doubles, winning 7-6(3), 6-4.

In the third set of the first set, the Latin American duo were leading 5-3 when Gonzalez managed a mini-break on his own serve, at which point Tsitsipas erupted into a fit of rage after hitting the ball with the frame of his racket and committing an unforced error.

Tsitsipas’ great anger surprised everyone present, including his girlfriend Badosa, who was visibly shocked when she felt the strong impact as the Greek hurled his racket to the ground.

Serena Williams is the focus of attention as a spectator at the US Open

Serena Williams has returned to the US Open, this time as a spectator, and took several photos during her visit to Flushing Meadows. The former world number one is celebrating her retirement two years ago, at the very tournament where she lost in the third round to Alja Tomljanovic at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams won six US Open titles between 1999 and 2014, sharing the record for most titles in the Open era with Chris Evert, set between 1975 and 1982. The 23-time Grand Slam champion attended the match of the current men’s world number 1: Jannik Sinner, who defeated Christopher O’Connell in straight sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-2) to advance to the round of 16.

Kyrgios HighlightsTiafoe and Shelton’s heartwarming post-match hug

Nick Kyrgios has remained in the spotlight during the US Open, despite now having another role as a TV analyst, with the Australian this time praising the post-match hug between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton at Flushing Meadows.

Tiafoe and Shelton played one of the best matches of the US Open so far. The Americans met in the third round and provided a real feast for the local crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with both players showing their best form.

Big Foe avenged the defeat he suffered at the same venue last year and moved into the fourth round with a win (4:6, 7:5, 6:7(5), 6:4, 6:3). After the match, both players demonstrated their good relationship since the court, hugging each other in a friendly manner and congratulating each other on the match.

The video of the hug spread on social media, and Nick Kyrgios shared the moment on his profile, praising the warm embrace at the end of the match: “That’s sport. Well done guys,” the former Wimbledon runner-up wrote on X.

Danielle Collins enjoys a break in the mountains after her early US Open exit

Danielle Collins shared a video on Instagram while taking a break in the mountains. The former Australian Open runner-up was eliminated in the first round by fellow countrywoman Caroline Dolehide (No. 49) 6-1, 5-7, 4-6, making her final appearance in a Grand Slam main draw.

The 30-year-old American is in her final season as a professional and, as she revealed before the US Open, is aiming to compete in the WTA Finals to end her career on a high. Collins is currently ranked 7th in the WTA Race, although she missed a valuable opportunity to earn points as Emma Navarro and Zheng Qinwen threatened to overtake her in the rankings.

Today, Collins revealed she’s enjoying some time off at the end of the North American summer. The world number 10 shares a video and photos of herself hiking in the mountains with boyfriend Bryan Kipp, accompanied by the song “August” by Taylor Swift, against a beautiful backdrop.
