Dynamo Dresden’s youngster Tony Menzel had a fairytale start

Dynamo Dresden’s youngster Tony Menzel had a fairytale start

After only four match days, a shooting star has already emerged at Dynamo Dresden: Tony Menzel is currently an integral part of the SGD team.

Dresden- “The guy is amazing! He’s about a meter tall and he scores a goal with a header. Tony, just hats off,” says Vinko Sapina (29), bowing to the performance of Tony Menzel (19). Dynamo Dresden Youngster is writing something like his own fairytale in the early stages of the season.

In the 2-0 (1-0) victory against the second team of VfB Stuttgart on Saturday, the 19-year-old really came into his own with what was probably his best performance of the season and crowned it with his second goal of the season in the fourth game.

“The coach talked about it during preparation. Everyone has the same chance and he gave it his all. He took his chance and had the momentum on his side,” said Sapina, who played a really good game herself.

The 29-year-old managed to score with his header in the 31st minute, which Stuttgart keeper Dennis Seimen (18) managed to hit the crossbar, but not what Menzel managed 41 minutes later. The youngster had served him perfectly, though.

We would have liked to ask him about his performance explosion and his professional fairytale after Dynamo’s third win of the season, but the club blocked us. Others have to talk about him, Menzel was not allowed to, perhaps he should be kept on the ground. But that is not necessary at all with a homegrown player in his form.

“I don’t have the impression that you have to keep him on the ground. He’s just a very good boy. You can see on the pitch that he’s very self-confident. That’s how it has to be,” explains midfield colleague Niklas Hauptmann (28), who is nine years older. “He’s performing very well and will make his way.”

The development comes as no surprise to Dynamo’s vice-captain and his coach. That’s why it’s currently difficult to imagine Dynamo’s starting eleven without Menzel.

“I have to agree with you. He confirms it again and again in training. It’s not just his goal, it’s also the volume of running, the intensity and the way he works,” enthuses Thomas Stamm (41).

The 41-year-old also points out: “He is still a very young player. You have to admit that he didn’t have his best game in Aue. That’s normal at that level and age.”

But he praised: “I’m happy that he’s so down to earth. There’s no need to bring him down. He’s happy that he’s playing from the start, but he would have the same mentality if it wasn’t so.”
