Preview / Schedule US Open 2024 Day Six Saturday 31 August with Sinner, Swiatek, Medvedev and Pegula

The US Open continues with Day 6, and it will be another good day with names like Jannik Sinner, Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek on the court.

We’re slowly approaching Week 2 of the US Open, which means we’re getting better and better matchups as the best come through the draw. There are some big names on the schedule for Saturday. We’ll also take a look at who will be playing on Day 6 of the tournament. As always, we’ll start with the Arthur Ashe schedule and then work our way down to the smaller courts.

Swiatek Headlines Night Session

The first match on Ashe will start at 12:00 local time, as will all the first matches on Ashe this week. It will feature an American tennis player, Jessica Pegula, who has been in great form in recent weeks. She came to New York with a record of 9-1 in her last 10 matches and has done very well in New York so far.

Her opponent will be a Spaniard who has managed to reach this round with flying colors and who poses a threat because she can generate so much power from a standing start. After this match there is another exciting match when Jannik Sinner continues his US Open campaign and his opponent is Christopher O’Connell.

The Australian has been a more solid player at times, but overall he will be pretty overwhelmed here. Sinner has been simply amazing so far, and he will likely continue that here with another clear set win. Anything else would be a pretty big surprise.

In the night session on Ashe, there will be one player who doesn’t like playing at night and that is Iga Swiatek. The Pole has admitted several times that she is not particularly keen on night matches, but this time she will have to play one and it is a tricky match as she will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

While the Russian is unlikely to beat Swiatek, she is the type of player who will put pressure on Swiatek. She is an aggressive baseline player who can play amazing tennis at times, but is very inconsistent. Swiatek’s consistency from the baseline should be enough to overcome the Russian, but you never know. Swiatek has shown some weaknesses this year. Even this week in New York, some players were able to put pressure on her, so overall it could be a pretty difficult matchup.

The final fight of the night shift will see Daniil Medvedev take on Flavio Cobolli. This has the potential to be a really intriguing match as Medvedev is always a box office draw. He will just bring his personality and that should be enough to make the fight interesting. Cobolli is a tougher competitor who got his start in football before switching to tennis after an injury. He is a really skilled player and has been playing really solid tennis over the last few weeks so this can be a really intriguing match.

Paolini and Paul play on Louis Armstrong

Five matches will be played on the second largest court of the US Open, which is again the same as in previous days. Unlike Arthur Ashe, the program starts an hour earlier and the first match on day 6 will be between Yulia Putintseva and Jasmine Paolini. It is an interesting match between two players who are not the tallest but bring a lot of passion to the tennis court.

Both are in good form, with Paolini having had a career year while Putintseva looks really solid. Expect long rallies and plenty of passion in this match, as both will be fantasizing about their chances of winning.

Jasmine Paolini is one who wants to reach another fourth round.

The second match against Armstrong will be played by another Italian, Sara Errani, who has performed brilliantly at the US Open so far. Even in her prime over ten years ago, Errani was not known as a very good hard court player, but now she is. Her opponent will be an in-form Diana Shnaider, who has looked really good, so that will also be difficult for Errani.

If she wins that match, we can potentially talk about a swan song. Right now, it’s clear that they’re the second match of the day in Armstrong, and the rest will be seen. The third match will be another interesting one because we’re facing Tommy Paul, who has played very solid tennis this year. In many ways, he’s been the best American overall, and the rankings say so.

He will face Gabriel Diallo, a qualifier who is on the rise with some amazing wins like the one against Arthur Fils. He’s a really strong server, but nothing Paul hasn’t seen before. The American will likely prove that the US really is better than Canada, at least in this match. Armstrong’s night shift will also be pretty solid. We’re starting with a matchup that will potentially last between 7 and 10 hours.

Alex de Minaur will face Dan Evans. These two players don’t mind playing long rallies; in fact, they may even prefer it. De Minaur is all about running and he likes to patiently build points before finishing them off. Evans is an excellent defender who has 15,000 different slice variations to achieve his goal of provoking an error.

It promises to be a very long match, which is the last thing Evans needs after he already set the record for the longest match at the US Open this year. He spent almost six hours on court against Khachanov, and it looks set to be a long one again.

The last match is a WTA match: Haddad Maia faces Anna Kalinskaya. It’s an interesting match between two players who can be crazy on their day, but we’ll see who comes out on top this time.

Muchova, Draper and Wozniacki in the stands

The third-largest court will also see some impressive matchups. In some ways, you could say that this lineup is better than the one on Louis Armstrong, but we’ll see how it goes. The first match is between Karolina Muchova and Anastasia Potapova, which is a pretty crazy match. Muchova beat Naomi Osaka with flying colors, and that level should be enough for Anastasia Potapova, but the Russian is known to be an inconsistent player.

It’s not impossible that she turns up the heat, puts in a crazy performance and wins the match. Either way, it’s going to be a must-see match on TV, so check it out. Next up is Jack Draper, who was lucky that Botic van de Zandschulp went through, as the alternative would have been Carlos Alcaraz.

The wonderful Muchova should shine again?

Draper’s chances are far greater against the Dutchman than against Alcaraz, even though Botic showed a legendary level to beat the Spaniard. We will see if he can repeat that feat, but the win against Alcaraz made everyone sit up and take notice. It was a wonderful display of tennis.

The next match is against veteran Caroline Wozniacki. She has played a really solid tournament again. No one is really paying much attention to her, but she has been playing very solid tennis recently and it is likely that this will continue as she is heavily favored to win this match. Ponchet has played solid tennis this year, but she is not a player who is expected to continue to play so well at this level.

The final match will be a real clash of styles as Matteo Arnaldi takes on Jordan Thompson. The Australian beat Hubert Hurkacz with a really good performance and has generally looked very good this year. Arnaldi has been performing well on hard courts for some time now. He had a good run in New York last year so this is hardly a surprise. He is an aggressive baseliner who will keep serving but Thompson is good enough to counter that.

Some other matches we have to mention are Goffin vs Machac. These two have met very well and this is a good chance for both of them to get another win. The matchup is favorable for both of them. Jakub Mensik has a chance to continue his good run in New York. Last year he did very well and this year he faces Nuno Borges who is not the most difficult player to beat but without a good performance you will not be able to beat him.

Another interesting match is between Ashlyn Krueger and Liudmila Samsonova. Things will be pretty easy in this match as they will be exchanging blows from the baseline and the one who performs better will probably win the match.
