The village shop on the main street has been there for nine months. Nadine and Andreas Matthes shop here regularly, especially fruit, vegetables and meat. “We want to support the shop here.” The two are mobile and could also drive to the supermarket. But the Obereisesheim residents think “shopping locally” is important.

You can shop in a relaxed manner in the village shop

“We are happy that we have the shop,” says an 89-year-old who used to shop “quickly”. Saleswoman Erika Johann enjoys her job. “It’s nice here, people have time when they come to shop.”

Gerd and Elke Sommer, who took over the village shop in Obereisesheim after the bakery closed, are happy about every customer. But Elke Sommer also notes: “There could be more.” During the summer holidays, the shop is only open in the mornings, after which it is also open in the afternoons between 3 and 6 p.m. “Sometimes there are only 15 to 20 customers, and at the weekend, when we sell baked goods, there can be 60 to 70.” To make ends meet, 100 shoppers a day would be ideal.

“What is going really well are our homemade products, like the pickled vegetables Quer Beet,” says Elke Sommer. She runs the farm with a farm shop in Untereisesheim with her husband Gerd. “The two shops have the advantage that we can balance the quantities of goods quite well.” In addition to spelt products, customer Susanne Schöfinius is also looking for rapeseed oil, which is still in stock at the farm shop in the neighboring town.

However, some things, such as yoghurt and other dairy products, cannot be sold in time. “I use them for baking,” explains Elke Sommer. The homemade goulash, minced meat and bolognese are very popular – all made from organic beef from our own farm. “Gerd’s Burger Kit” also includes the homemade buns. “They’re a hit, they’re very popular,” reports Erika Johann.

It’s worth looking around: the zucchini mix or the “pumpkin-coconut” jam offer new flavor nuances. When things are less busy, we take stock of what needs to be ordered or made ourselves. Ilona Liebendörfer buys here when she needs it, “what doesn’t grow in the garden. There are only two of us, so it’s good that you can buy smaller quantities unpacked.” She finds the red carrots interesting. “They taste much more intense.”

Large catchment area: Some customers come specifically to Obereisesheim

Some customers come from Bad Rappenau, Heilbronn or Neckargartach specifically to Obereisesheim to shop. Nevertheless, the main street does not have the customer frequency that is actually needed. An initiative to revitalize retail, such as the one the local council has now decided on for the city center, would also be welcomed in the district. “We are very happy that we have a shopping opportunity in the town again, that retail is not dying out here,” says Sabine Ullmann.
