A litter of eleven puppies dies in a house fire in Belair-Edison

BALTIMORE – A home on Dudley Avenue in the Belair-Edison neighborhood was destroyed in a fire Thursday night.

For Victory Swift-Gyenyame, affectionately known in the community as “Mama Victory,” tragedy is nothing new.

In 2017, her youngest child was murdered in the city. Now she has lost her home.

Mama Victory said a roommate was woken up around 4 a.m. by the smell of burning.

“When I went down the stairs, the smoke was so thick that I immediately held my breath. When I got to the bottom of the stairs, the flames were in the window, the air conditioning had caught fire and we barely escaped with our lives.”

Fortunately, one mother and one father dog survived, but their three-week-old litter of 11 puppies unfortunately did not make it.

Although the fire destroyed almost everything, Mama Victory cried tears of joy when her neighbors came in large numbers and brought us clothes and other essentials.

Two other houses were also damaged by the fire. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Mama Victory and her roommate cope with the aftermath of the fire.
