Mother and son dead, another person injured after fire on Greenfield Avenue in Ardmore, Pennsylvania

ARDMORE, Pa. (WPVI) — A fire in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, killed a mother and her son and injured another woman.

The fire broke out around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Greenfield Avenue.

When the fire brigade arrived on the scene, heavy flames were blazing from the second floor of the building. The fire was extinguished after about 30 minutes.

According to the Lower Merion Twp. Fire Department, a woman in her 90s and her son, who is in his 60s, died in the fire. They were both found in a back bedroom.

The man was found standing in the doorway and his mother was still in her bed.

“This is a tough day for our guys and the neighbors,” said Lower Merion Fire Chief James McCoy. “We’ve never had two fatalities in our community since we can remember.”

A 29-year-old woman who was in the house is being treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but is believed to be accidental. The fire was largely contained to the rear bedroom.

Investigators said there were smoke detectors in the house, but they were not working.

“We found smoke detectors without batteries,” McCoy said. “There were about five or six smoke detectors in this house, none of them with working batteries.”

The names of the victims were not released.
