5 Michigan beaches closed due to warnings ahead of Labor Day weekend

Ahead of the long holiday weekend, commonly considered the unofficial end of summer, five beaches in Michigan are closed or have contamination warnings in place.

MLive meteorologist Mark Torregrossa’s four-day weather forecast for Labor Day weekend calls for a day of true beach weather: Saturday. Saturday is expected to be dry and warm across the state.

Meanwhile, there will be some rain on Friday and Sunday, and Monday is expected to feel more autumnal, he said.

If you plan to go to the beach this weekend, check this list of beaches that are closed or have a contamination alert because the water quality is unsafe or questionable for human contact.

Even if your favorite spot is on the list, there are still plenty of ways to visit the state’s fantastic swimming beaches, as there are more than 1,800 to choose from. What’s more, beaches are regularly tested and their status is frequently updated. Find up-to-date information here.

Here is the current blocking and advisory list from Thursday, August 29th:

  • Ross Lake, Beaverton City Park, Gladwin County – Contamination alert since July 16 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
  • Houghton Lake, Lakeview Waterfront Park, Roscommon County – Contamination Alert issued July 18 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
  • Lake Bellaire, Richardi Park, Antrim County – Contamination Alert in effect since July 25 due to “other” incidents from an unknown source.
  • Park Lake, Bath Township Park Lake Beach, Clinton County – Contamination Alert in effect since August 9 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
  • Lake St. Clair, St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach, Macomb County – Contamination Alert in effect since August 27 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

The status of each beach is subject to change as new test results come in. A current map of red flagged beaches and water quality testing details can be found here on the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s Beach Guard website.

The Beach Guard website informs the public about water quality at beaches across the state. It includes water sampling results and daily updates on which beaches are under warnings or have been closed. The data includes 1,244 public and 574 private beaches.
