The Kentucky Board of Pharmacy is investigating Med Save for “multiple areas of noncompliance” after three children were hospitalized in Henry County.

A cooperative investigation into the pharmacy’s business practices began on Monday after the board was informed of an alleged drug manufacturing error.

According to a press release from the panel, violations of state and federal laws were found, including a lack of documented training for employees, a lack of adequate pharmacy oversight and a lack of evidence or sufficient documentation for preparation manufacturing, procedures, records and storage.

The Board of Pharmacists follows the U.S. Pharmacopeia’s standards for drug manufacturing, the FDA standard, and on Wednesday an emergency meeting was called by the investigating committee. Med Save then signed an order to stop manufacturing and dispensing drugs such as clonidine.

According to the FDA website, drug manufacturing is done when “a patient cannot be treated with an FDA-approved drug, such as a patient who is allergic to a particular dye and needs a drug without that dye, or an elderly patient or child who cannot swallow a tablet or capsule and needs a drug in liquid dosage form.”

The ongoing investigation follows the hospitalization of three children who were prescribed an oral clonidine suspension at the pharmacy in Eminence, Kentucky. The panel believes the incident was limited to the Med Save location and only affected the three patients.

“The Kentucky Board of Pharmacy assures the public that we will hold pharmacies accountable for their actions when they deviate from the standards of a pharmacy that manufactures its own drugs,” the board said.

The board requests all similarly affected people to come forward immediately.

Med Save was not available for immediate comment.
