Just released Dolphins safety chooses Texans as new home instead of Pittsburgh Steelers

During 53-man cuts, the Miami Dolphins released safety Mark Perry. Perry has decided to join the Houston Texans despite several offers, including one from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former TCU safety was an undrafted free agent in the 2024 NFL Draft and had several interested teams wanting to give him a spot on their practice squad, but Perry chose Houston.

At TCU’s Pro Day, the 6-foot-4 Perry ran the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds, showing he has the athleticism needed to succeed in the NFL as a strong safety and free safety. He missed some training camp due to a non-football-related illness but returned in time for the preseason.

Perry couldn’t force his way into the Dolphins’ safety department, but his performance on special teams in the preseason seems to have gotten him noticed. The Dolphins wanted Perry back, but the Texans seem to give him the best chance of making the 53-man roster.

The California native began his college career at Colorado before transferring to TCU. He was a high school teammate of Texans quarterback CJ Stroud, which probably didn’t hurt the pitcher when he joined the team. Other interested teams included the Jaguars, Patriots, Jets and Dolphins, who were keen to bring him back to the team.

The Steelers will likely need to add a safety to their practice squad, as the active roster has five players and Ryan Watts is out for the season with a neck injury.
