UEFA Champions League 2024/25 draw: Live updates, results as teams learn league stage fixtures and schedule

UEFA Champions League 2024/25 draw: Live updates, results as teams learn league stage fixtures and schedule

For fans around the world, the new UEFA Champions League really begins with the draw for the competition’s opening phase on 29 August.

The last seven of the 36 teams in the “league phase” qualified via the play-off round this week and thus secured their places in the draw in Monaco.

For the 2024/25 season, the draw will look slightly different. The expanded competition will replace the traditional group stage with a new league stage, so that each team will play eight games instead of six and the likelihood of so-called “big” teams meeting earlier in the tournament will increase.

The Sporting News will follow the draw live and provide updates and the confirmed schedule below.

2024/25 UEFA Champions League draw: live updates

Draw for Pot 4: And we’re complete! Incredibly, Sturm Graz have perhaps one of the easiest draws in the entire competition and could be a surprise candidate for a knockout spot from Pot 4. Thanks for joining us!

Draw for Pot 3: We’re done with Pot 3, which means the draw is almost complete! Only the pairings between the pots in Pot 4 are yet to be announced.

Draw for Pot 2: The second team list is now complete! AC Milan have a very difficult draw, while Arsenal have an easy list outside of the Pot 1 teams.

Pot 1 draw: The draw for Pot 1 is complete and there are some great matchups! Real Madrid travel to Anfield to face Liverpool, while Borussia Dortmund have been drawn against both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

PSG have a real challenge from top to bottom and will have to draw perhaps the two strongest teams from each pot. It will be extremely difficult for them to get into the knockout phase.

30 minutes in: You have just explained how the draw will work. The teams will be drawn individually by hand, which is essentially a formality. The majority of the draw will be done by a computer program, which will assign the teams listed in the manual draw their eight opponents and classify them as home or away teams.

Ultimately, it’s quite simple.

20 minutes in: UEFA has just released what is probably the craziest short film explaining the new Champions League format. Zlatan Ibrahimovic angrily explained the format to Aleksander Ceferin as if it was his idea, while an orchestra played the UCL anthem in the background. It was weird, but kind of funny!

You can watch the 5-minute clip here:

15 minutes in: Now Ceferin is honoring Cristiano Ronaldo, who is receiving a trophy as the top scorer in Champions League history. The trophy is essentially a UCL version of the Ballon d’Or.

10 minutes in: UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin presents the President’s Award to legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon on stage. Gigi is a popular player! He will help with the draw once it begins.

Draw start: Let’s get started! The draw will begin soon. We know how it works, but it will probably take some time.

15 minutes to draw: Once the draw is complete, UEFA will take its time to finalise the match dates and kick-off times. There have been rumours that these will not be announced until sometime this weekend.

Once tickets are distributed, each team will take care of the primary market. Fans can still purchase tickets on the secondary market through StubHub International, the best place to buy tickets to Champions League matches.

45 minutes to draw: As you know by now, today’s draw is the first in the brave new era of the Champions League’s “league phase.” Curious to see how it will work? Read on.

1 hour for drawing time: Welcome to today’s UEFA Champions League draw! This is the first draw under the new ‘Swiss model’, which sees an expanded field of 36 teams drawn into a league phase.

Which teams will take part in the UEFA Champions League draw?

Below are the 36 teams taking part in the draw for the ‘League Phase’ of the Champions League. The teams have been divided into four pots and each team will be drawn against one team from each pot.

How to buy Champions League tickets 2024/25

As soon as dates and times for the Champions League matches are confirmed, ticket sales will begin. With the exception of the final itself, tickets for European matches cannot be purchased directly from UEFA.

Instead, the primary ticket sales will be handled by the participating clubs themselves, so fans can easily access them as they would at other games.

Once tickets have been distributed, fans can still purchase tickets on the secondary market. StubHub International is the best place to buy tickets to Champions League matches.
