Sheffield Lake man recovers after house fire

A Sheffield Lake man is recovering after firefighters rescued him from a fire at his home on Aug. 27, according to Sheffield Lake Fire Department Chief David Novak.

The man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital, Novak said.

“The guys did a fantastic job,” said Novak. “It was a textbook example of three-man firefighting and victim rescue.”

At 5 p.m., Sheffield Lake Fire Department responded to a fire in the 4000 block of Holl Road that trapped people, he said.

Firefighters arrived four minutes after the emergency call, Novak said.

When they arrived, a man was in a room on the second floor with his face pressed against the screen.

A firefighter pulled the man out of the window, Novak said.

Another firefighter gave the victim oxygen while a third firefighter was able to stop the fire from spreading, the chief said.

Firefighters from Sheffield Township took the man to the hospital, Novak said. He had no current information on the man’s condition.

The fire caused $50,000 in damage, Novak said.

The Red Cross is helping the residents, he said.

The state fire marshal is investigating the fire, Novak said.

Sheffield Lake received mutual aid from the fire departments of Avon, Elyria Township, Lorain and Sheffield Village, he said.
