What could be next for 5 UFC fighters that Dana White hinted at news about?

What could be next for 5 UFC fighters that Dana White hinted at news about?

Key findings

  • Conor McGregor, Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway are among several big UFC stars who could have fights announced soon.

  • Dana White has announced that more information about these fights will be confirmed in the coming days.

  • McGregor was supposed to face Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in June, but then canceled due to injury.

During an Instagram Live appearance last night, UFC President Dana White confirmed that there will be fight news for some of the biggest names in the UFC. White teased news about stars like Conor McGregor, Michael Chandler, Charles Oliveira, Alexander Volkanovski and BMF champion Max Holloway.

Although White confirmed there would be news on these fighters, he did not confirm or speculate who the opponents might be. Following this update from the UFC president, GIVEMESPORT has predicted what might be next for the fighters White mentioned in the August 28 video.

Conor McGregor

“The Notorious” promotes the fight in December on social media

Although Dana White recently shut down talk of a Conor McGregor fight this year, there now seems to have been a breakthrough and new fight news about the Irish superstar will soon follow.

McGregor, of course, has been scheduled to fight Michael Chandler for 18 months and that fight was officially scheduled for June, but due to a toe injury suffered by “The Notorious” he pulled out of the fight, resulting in Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka 2 for the UFC light heavyweight title becoming the new main event of UFC 303. Although McGregor sustained an injury, it was not serious and around the time of the fight’s cancellation there were rumors that the Irishman was pushing to fight as early as August but may have to settle for later this year as the UFC appears to have tightened up its schedule.

Rebooking the Chandler fight seems like the most obvious next step for the UFC and McGregor, as that’s apparently what all parties want. As always, though, the Irishman has plenty of options on the table. Some of the directions the UFC could go if they don’t want to rebook the Chandler fight for McGregor include potential fights against top-five UFC lightweight contenders like Charles Oliveira and Dan Hooker, who actually challenged McGregor after his win over Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 305, or even a fourth fight against Dustin Poirier.

Michael Chandler

Chandler recently showed his willingness to give up the fight against Conor McGregor

Michael Chandler

As mentioned above, the likely next step for Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler is for the UFC to rebook the fight and finally end the saga that has been going on for nearly two years. The two have been scheduled to fight each other since filming for The Ultimate Fighter season 31 began over a year and a half ago. While it’s a big fight, as seen with Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson, some fights are just not meant to be together.

Although Chandler has a lot of money at stake in a fight against McGregor, he is now 38 years old and has been out of the Octagon for nearly two years, which is not ideal for an aging fighter. Given his age and inactivity, Chandler recently expressed his frustration with his current situation with “The Notorious” and stated that he is ready to put him behind him once and for all.

Speaking to Beat The Heat, Chandler said: “I’m ready to put you behind me. I’m ready to lay you flat on your back in the middle of an Octagon, wherever that is, hopefully in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I can walk out of that Octagon and never have to think about you again. I can just ride the wave of success of those who were there that night.”

Although Chandler is visibly frustrated, it seems unlikely that he will give up the fight against McGregor at this point. He will likely fight the Irishman again later this year or early next year.

Oliveira’s fight plans may have been revealed last week by a big UFC 305 winner

Charles Oliveira in the Octagon

Charles Oliveira is a huge fan favorite and the announcement of Dana White’s upcoming fight news for him should have excited many MMA fans. Oliveira remains one of the best lightweights in the world despite his loss to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300 and will no doubt find himself in another fight next against a top contender that will help him work toward the UFC lightweight title again. Fight news for “Do Bronx” seemingly leaked last week when one of the big winners of UFC 305, Dan Hooker, announced that the UFC was looking to set up a fight between him and Oliveira.

Following his victory over Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 305, Hooker rose to #5 in the UFC lightweight rankings, putting him in good position for future title fights. Oliveira vs. Hooker seems to be the current target fight, and this is a fight that will absolutely deliver on its promise and that any fan will enjoy watching.

Alexander Volkanovsky

Volkanovski has indicated that he will have “fun fights” at lightweight while he awaits his rematch at featherweight.

Alexander Volkanovski in the cage

Although it looked for a while like Alexander Volkanovski would get an immediate rematch with Ilia Topuria for the UFC featherweight title, that is no longer the case. Instead, the Australian seems to be planning to fight “fun fights” at lightweight while he waits for his chance at featherweight gold.

In several interviews over the past few months, Volkanovski has named Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier as opponents he would like to fight at lightweight. Since Oliveira will likely face Dan Hooker, we can probably rule that fight out, but a fight against “The Diamond” seems quite possible.

Poirier has also said that at this stage of his career, he is also looking for fights that excite him, and a fight against Volkanovski would certainly fall into that category. Poirier almost ended his career after losing to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, which was his last chance at UFC gold, but he made a U-turn on his retirement plans and now plans to keep fighting instead.

Max Holloway

Holloway is scheduled to fight Ilia Topuria for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 308.

Max Holloway after the KO of Justin Gaethje

When Dana White said he had news on Max Holloway, many MMA fans were confused, as he is currently booked to face Ilia Topuria for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 308 in October. Many fans then speculated that Topuria may have pulled out of the fight, but it is likely that the news White is hinting at is about an upcoming BMF title fight. Holloway’s BMF title is not on the line in his upcoming fight against “El Matador.”

While there aren’t many obvious options to face Holloway next for the BMF title at the moment, there are some big names at lightweight that the UFC could pit him against. Some of the names Holloway could defend his BMF title against next include Dustin Poirier, Charles Oliveira, Conor McGregor, and Michael Chandler. All of these fighters were mentioned above, but the UFC likes to fool people and often surprise them, so there could be some surprising BMF news soon regarding Holloway and any of the aforementioned fighters.
