Samsung improves AI life at home with improved voice control for customized AI devices

Complement to the updated Bixby, which now understands more complex commands

  • Samsung is also introducing the Generative Wallpaper feature, which gives users another creative way to personalize their Family Hub™ screens.

Amman, Jordan, August 28, 2024: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that it will update its voice assistant Bixby [1] with improved AI in household appliances. [2] Bixby, which will be updated starting August 27, features a voice understanding feature that better understands complex, natural language-based commands, giving users easier device control.

“Samsung’s home appliances have been designed and continue to evolve to enhance the user experience,” said Miyoung Yoo, EVP and head of the software development team of the Digital Appliances business unit at Samsung Electronics. “With the launch of the enhanced Bixby, we look forward to improving consumers’ lives, enabling them to use their appliances more easily and providing a better, more personalized user experience.”

Samsung launched several home appliances with AI features earlier this year, including the customized 4-door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub™ [3] with AI Vision Inside, [4] Custom Jet Bot Combo™ AI with enhanced AI object recognition, [5] and customized AI Laundry Combo™ with AI Home. [6] Samsung goes one step further and wants to create an even better customer experience by introducing new features.

Bixby: Better voice control for household appliances

The improved Bixby enables better voice control through three main functions. [7]– understand complex commands (multi-intent), recall previous conversations (multi-turn) and answer product-related questions (device Q&A). [8] Samsung will initially provide the update to five products launching in 2024: the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub™; Bespoke AI Laundry Combo™; Bespoke Slide-in Range; Bespoke Jet Bot Combo™ AI; and the Bespoke AI WindFree™ Gallery Freestanding Air Conditioner. [9]

First, the updated Bixby can understand commands that consist of multiple or unrelated requests in a sentence. Users can control other devices connected via SmartThings [10] with the improved Bixby, allowing them to express their requests more naturally than before. For example, users can ask the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo™, “Hi Bixby, how’s the weather? Start washing and cleaning the living room,” and Bixby will execute the command in order. [11]

Second, Bixby is able to remember contexts of past conversations [12]allowing users to have continuous dialogues with appliances rather than issuing isolated commands. If users say to the custom-built 4-door refrigerator with AI Family Hub™, “Hi Bixby, tell me when the family dinner is today,” and Bixby responds, users can follow up and say, “Then set the washing machine to finish an hour earlier.” [13]

And last but not least, it offers users help when they encounter problems while using appliances or become curious about certain cycles or features. When an error code appears on the appliance screen, users can turn to Bixby to ask what it means instead of searching the user manual or contacting the call center. They can ask questions like, “Hi Bixby, I hear clicking noises in the refrigerator. Why is that?” and Bixby will provide multiple answers. Appliances with screens, such as refrigerators with AI Family Hub™ or the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo™, display the answer on the screen, while appliances without screens provide audio responses.

Generative Wallpaper: A unique background for each user’s Family Hub™ screen

The refrigerators with Family Hub™ that will be launched in Korea and the US after 2022 will also be equipped with a new feature. A new wallpaper feature called Generative Wallpaper [14] allows users to create custom wallpapers. [15]

Users can select a theme from seven categories and a style from six art styles. With these two options selected, the Family Hub™ creates an image tailored to the user. The image can be applied to the title screen or whiteboard, or saved to an album for later use.

Samsung plans to exhibit the customized AI devices with the enhanced Bixby and Generative Wallpaper features at IFA 2024 so that more people can experience and understand how they improve the user experience.
