Charles County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department rejects charter proposal

Charles County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department rejects charter proposal

WALDORF, Maryland. – In reviewing the proposed charter, the Charles County Volunteer Fire and Emergency Services decided to adopt the non-partisan, non-communicative approaches of other local public service organizations before coming to a formal decision whether to support or oppose this initiative.

However, we did not just listen to ourselves. Our commitment to dispassionate analysis led us to include outside voices so that we could tell our members and the public we serve that we had considered the issue from all angles. Ultimately, we decided to officially reject the proposed charter.

The sole purpose of our association is to serve the citizens of Charles County. Our deep understanding of service has been evident in our wonderfully diverse population for more than 95 years. We believe an extension of that service is to educate the citizens of our county on any issue that may affect their public safety systems. The charter gives too much authority to one person: the County Executive. The overall document creates too many risks for any one of us who “pass it before you know it” or “pass it before we know how much it costs.”

We ask our citizens to support your volunteers by voting NO to the Charter on November 5, 2024.

Yours sincerely,
Your volunteer firefighters and rescue service citizens
