Blue is an EP that speaks volumes about how the music landscape has changed over the past few decades. If the beginning of the 21st century ushered in a creative post-genre wave, one that went beyond the idea of genres and their sounds, beyond tribal affiliations and, best of all, buried the idea that analog-made music and digitally designed sounds were opposing camps, then bands like Blueprint Tokyo are perhaps at the peak of this wave.

With only a handful of songs Headquartered in Oklahoma City The duo builds epic and lush soundscapes from chiming indie guitars and synth waves, the contagiousness of pop and the integrity of rock’n’roll, electronic sheen and raw acoustics.

This might seem like they’re throwing everything into the mix, and maybe they are, but if that’s the case, what sets them apart is their ability to trim the songs down to just the necessary musical strands.

So if songs like “Odysseus” are as epic and anthemic as such a name suggests, it’s not because of their sonic weight, volume or speed, but because of the deft and subtle walls of sound they build. And if “Mission Control” appeals to rock fans’ penchant for big and clever music, it will equally appeal to pop fans’ penchant for infectiousness and groove. And if “Transfer” is dark and intricate, shadowy and growling, it’s because it follows its natural inclinations rather than putting style over substance. Like all the songs found here, this one has both style and substance. AND substance and has this in no small quantity.

Blueprint Tokyo seems to have found the sweet spot between many points on the musical and metaphysical map, and the songs on Blue Sit halfway between analog and digital, between past and future, between power and melody, between shimmer and edge, between pop and hard matter, and the results are fantastic.
