Tyler Huntley is released; D’Onta Foreman is re-signed

The Browns are only missing three quarterbacks.

And up to three running backs.

Veteran quarterback Tyler Huntley is being released, a league source told the Chronicle-Telegram Thursday morning. The plan is to re-sign veteran running back D’Onta Foreman.

Jack Conklin believes he can still play at a high level after his recent serious knee injury – even as a left tackle

General manager Andrew Berry had tried to trade Huntley when rosters were cut this week but was unable to get a deal done. The Browns kept four quarterbacks for a few days and then decided to release Huntley, who went 3-6 in four years as a starter with the Ravens. He was signed as a free agent in March.

The Browns will begin the season with Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston and Dorian Thompson-Robinson as quarterbacks. Thompson-Robinson played better than Huntley in the preseason and secured the job.

Foreman, 28, will rejoin the team after his contract was terminated on Tuesday as part of roster cuts. Because he is a veteran player, he did not have to go on the waivers list, and the Browns could plan to bring him back and temporarily free up the roster spot for someone else.

He will join Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr. in the backfield.

From a health perspective, Foreman had a tough training camp.

He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Virginia after suffering neck and back pain following a hit during the team’s practice at the Greenbrier in West Virginia. He missed a week but then returned to practice.

He suffered a rib injury in the final game of the season against the Seahawks on Saturday.

Foreman has rushed for 2,326 yards, a 4.2 average and 14 touchdowns in his six-year career.
