NFL record: 15 black quarterbacks to start Week 1 of 2024 season after Patriots name Jacoby Brissett as starter for opening game

The New England Patriots have signed Jacoby Brissett their starting quarterback on Thursday, making NFL history. Brissett is officially at the top of the lineup and the 15th black quarterback expected to start the 2024 season as quarterback – more than ever since the NFL was founded.

The historic achievement comes one year after 14 different black quarterbacks started in Week 1 of the 2023 season, breaking last year’s record of 11. The record for black representation at the game’s most important position has now been broken four times in the last five years, and black quarterbacks make up nearly 47% of all starting jobs at the position.

Brissett’s entry into the club comes two years after Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes became the first black quarterback duo to face each other in the Super Bowl.
