The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced the arrest of a suspect involved in a shooting in the southeastern part of the country on July 24, 2024.

On that day, at approximately 6:50 p.m., MPD officers responded to the 1800 block of Marion Barry Avenue on the southeast side for a report of a traffic accident. Officers located an adult male gunshot victim in a crashed vehicle. The vehicle had collided with a retaining wall.

DC Fire and EMS then transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of his life-threatening injuries.

As a result of detectives’ investigation, Demarco Hayes, a 21-year-old resident of Southeast, DC, was arrested on August 28, 2024. Hayes was charged with armed assault with intent to kill.
