“Coward like a chicken” … Tony Ferguson fires back at Khabib Nurmagomedov over “Lucky Punch” comments

“Coward like a chicken” … Tony Ferguson fires back at Khabib Nurmagomedov over “Lucky Punch” comments

Did you really think the biggest “what if” rivalry in UFC history would end because of a career-ending decision? Even now, four years after their last scheduled fight, Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov are still trading vicious insults online.

A fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and “El Cucuy” was planned in the Octagon five times, and the fight was canceled five times – but that didn’t stop the two superstars from trying to have the last laugh.

According to Khabib, Tony Ferguson’s chances were based on a “lucky shot”

The bitter rivalry between “The Eagle” and Tony Ferguson flared up again this week. The Russian, with a record of 29-0, initially stated that if the two had actually met in the Octagon, Ferguson would have only been able to land a “lucky shot”.

Speaking on the “Inspire Me” podcast, the dominant lightweight champion said he was “a little sad” that their fight never happened, but added: “I always understand that my game is the worst for him.”

“He can’t wrestle, he can’t wrestle, what is he going to do to me? How is he going to stop me? I only have one chance for him to stop me, it was just a lucky shot.”

“As with everyone, as with Conor [McGregor]with [Dustin] Poirier, with Justin Gaethje, everyone is talking about, ‘Oh, they can stop him if Khabib [gets caught flush] a lucky shot’, but other stuff, how can he stop me?”

Ferguson and Khabib were scheduled to fight five times from 2015 to 2020, but both teams canceled twice and the last fight was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“When he fought with Danny Castillo, [Beneil] Dariush, Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, all those guys beat him up – he had no wrestling defense. He wasn’t good at grappling. My martial arts were the worst for him.”

“I’m a little sad, but what can we do? If God has a plan, nobody can change that. We were supposed to fight five times. He canceled, I have injuries, it’s not in my control… I’m a little sad, but at the same time [I] showed who had what level.”

Tony Ferguson fires back at Khabib Nurmagomedov and calls him a “coward”

Unsurprisingly, these comments did not go down well with Ferguson. He launched a scathing attack on the undefeated Russian icon on Instagram. And in typical “El Cucuy” fashion, the experienced lightweight took no prisoners, calling Khabib “fat” and a “coward.”

“Now ‘Lucky Punch’ … [I] wanted to leave you alone but ugh I just couldn’t help myself,” Ferguson wrote, before addressing Khabib with, “Ya phat-phuhk! What a f***ing bitch, a coward like a chicken.”

“Continue to hide Khabieber 29-1. ItsOnLikeDonkeyKongB****. Champ – CSO – us #TiramisuTuesday begins, until further notice, Ol’e Fathead says what time it is crew.”

Ferguson, which caused some controversy, refused to announce his retirement after his eighth consecutive loss at UFC Abu Dhabi earlier this summer.

“I don’t want to quit. I really don’t. But I love the UFC and I don’t want to go anywhere else,” he told Daniel Cormier in an emotional post-fight interview, adding: “I’m not going to put both gloves down – I’m going to put one on and keep the other one, just in case.”

This decision did not go down well with his fellow UFC veterans, including Matt “The Immortal” Brown, who said Ferguson was like a “cocaine addict trying to get that high again.”

“When you lose eight in a row, it doesn’t matter where you are in your career – that’s pretty much ‘OK, you should probably give it up’… The problem is he had so many wins, he was interim champion, with a 12-fight winning streak at the time. He’s like a cocaine addict trying to get back to that peak… When you lose eight in a row, he’s like a cocaine addict trying to get back to that peak… [losses]that doesn’t matter.”
