Washington Huskies Football unveils new black jersey

Good Thursday morning, University Observers! I hope you all had a great Wednesday.

Less than a week after unveiling a new black helmet for the 2024 season, the Washington Huskies have now unveiled a new black jersey.

Even by college football standards, this was a strange introduction. When the team unveiled the new black helmet (alone) last week, I noted UW’s history with black helmets and noticed that they were always paired with black uniforms. At the time, I suggested that a new black uniform was probably coming. Well, we can probably still expect new black pants, but the team chose 1) not to unveil them at that time and 2) the new jerseys were not released by the team in a dimly lit hype video with lots of quick cuts. In fact, the team never produced a jersey hype video at all, at least to my knowledge.

Another odd move was that the team did not reveal the jerseys by showing them to the players, but instead released a series of photos of what would be more accurately described as fashion jerseys, as they are retail versions rather than special “football” cuts.

Let’s take a look.

Like the helmet, the jersey is black (and while it’s not confirmed, we can assume there will be black pants to match the jerseys). It features fairly large block-lettered numbers in gold on the front of the jersey. The team will play in the B1G conference for the foreseeable future, so it will have the conference logo and manufacturer’s mark on either side of the chest above the number. At the bottom of the collar is the team’s purple “W” logo outlined in gold, a replica of the logo on the new helmet.

Since it’s a fashion jersey, it has actual sleeves and on those sleeves are stripes with a purple/gold/purple-gold pattern that mimics the stripes on the helmet. I hope that the new black pants, when (if) they’re revealed, will also have that stripe pattern.

The back of the jersey is not pictured, but it is likely that the NOB will be in a gold block font and the numbers will be the same style as on the front.

Although the jersey (thankfully) has TV numbers, these do not follow the solid gold pattern on the front, but are “ghosted,” meaning they are black with a gold outline. While they are easy to spot here, I wonder how well they will actually show up on the field.

In case you didn’t click on the link at the top of this story, I’ll repeat here what I said about the BFBS helmet/varsity story.

This is not the first time the Huskies have played BFBS. In 2013, they wore a BFBS uniform, including a black helmet, against Oregon (it was almost a spy versus spy game).

This helmet had a matte finish with purple and gold stripes running from front to back, and these helmets had the same purple and gold decal as the 2024 BFBS helmet.

In 2014 and 2015, they kept the same matte black shell but removed the stripes and wore these helmets with a BFBS uniform.

They kept the same helmet and uniform for a 2016 game against USC, but swapped out the purple/gold decal for a Stars & Stripes decal.

They experimented with some black accents on their purple helmets in 2018-19 (so BFBS, even though the helmet wasn’t black), including a black “W” decal and a black face shield.

And in 2020, the team wore another black helmet. In a game against Arizona, they debuted a brand new BFBS uniform that matched the helmet. The helmet was again matte black with a purple/gold “W” decal. There were no stripes on the helmet.

So that’s their history with a black hat so far. In any case, they’ve worn a black uniform with it, so it’s at least likely (if not certain) that the team will pair the helmet with a BFBS uniform. While the new helmet isn’t the first with stripes, it is the first black helmet with the purple/gold/purple center stripe and a metallic gold cage.

Now that I have seen the jersey — and provided The pants will not be all black, but will have a stripe that matches the one on the helmet and the sleeves of the jersey (caps). This might be UW’s best looking BFBS uniform. As you can see above, their previous looks either had purple numbers (hard to read) or, when they actually used white numbers, plain black pants. Yes, it’s still BFBS, but if we are to rate it as a mere uniformit could look quite nice on the field.

Honestly, UW has two really solid uniforms with their gold/purple/gold home classics and their gold/white/purple away jerseys. Even if they go gold/purple/purple or gold/white/white, they still look good (and they Look like the Huskies).

I know the kids and recruits (and probably a lot of the fans) like the BFBS look – and like I said, these uniforms aren’t designed to please me. But for a school that participated in Natty last year, I would like to see them keep the alternate looks (and especially the BFBS) to an absolute minimum.

The team has not yet announced if and when the new uniforms will be worn, but we hope it will be just once and at a themed “blackout” game where fans can don all their black gear and fill the stadium.

Guess the game from the scoreboard

Guess the game…

…From the scoreboard

The current scoreboard comes from Roger Fogerty.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I post a scoreboard and you simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I always has left you completely baffled (some are easier than others).

Here’s the scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date and location, and final score). If anything notable happened during the game, please add that (and if you were at the game, bonus points for you!):

Please keep sending them to me! Feel free to send me any scoreboard photos (with replies please) and I will continue to post them.

Guess the game by the uniform

Based on a suggestion from a long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoranwe have introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch that is similar to the popular “Guess the Game by the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), except that here readers must guess the game based on the uniforms worn by the teams.

Like GTGFTS, readers are asked to guess the date, location and final result of the game using clues in the photo. Sometimes the game should be relatively easy to determine, while in other cases it can be quite difficult. It will normally There must be a visual clue (something odd or unique about one or both uniforms) that allows for a clear identification of one and only one game. In other cases, there may be something significant about the game in question, such as when a particular uniform was last worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and the date.

Today’s GTGFTU comes from Barton Hall.

Good luck! Please post your guess/answer in the comments below.

And finally …

…that’s it for the early post. I’ll write at least one more post this morning (and if you liked yesterday’s intro, you’ll love this one), but I’ll be out and about for much of the afternoon. If there’s any news, I’ll let you know as soon as I can.

I wish everyone a nice Thursday and will be back here tomorrow.

Peace,

PH
