Bowl Predictions: College Football Playoff Predictions

Bowl Predictions: College Football Playoff Predictions

The college football postseason will take on a new look with expanded playoffs and an extended schedule that extends into the second half of January. The changes come amid another round of conference realignment that will effectively reduce the Power Five to four major conferences and make the bowl situation more complex.

The added challenges don’t mean we’ll stop making our postseason predictions, though. It just means they’ll be harder and will likely require a lot of trial and error as we work through the initial difficulties. Expect a large number of SEC and Big Ten teams. This year’s preseason prediction includes four teams from the former and three from the latter. There are two teams from the ACC, one independent team and Group of Five winner, and one representative from the Big 12.

Oklahoma is a great example of how people need to recalibrate their evaluation of teams beyond their win-loss record. The Sooners face five teams ranked in the top 15 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, three on the road and one on neutral ground. A 9-3 record should probably be enough to beat a 10-2 team that doesn’t have the same quality of wins.

The fact that Florida State and North Carolina will be excluded as the second ACC representative was already decided before the Seminoles’ flop in Ireland and now seems more likely.

So, without further ado, here are the first version of the bowl predictions for this season, which are sure to change by the end of the schedule.
