International Overdose Awareness Day event in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts (WGGB/WSHM) — Members of the Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with several area organizations, will host an event Thursday to commemorate lives lost to overdose and raise awareness of the opioid crisis.

This year’s motto is “Together we can do it” and emphasizes the importance of collective action and advocacy for political change.

This event will take place from 6pm to 8pm at the Forbes Library in Northampton.

Activities include providing resources, training and distribution of Narcan, and community networking.

The official program begins at 7 p.m. with guest speakers affected by the opioid crisis, including family and friends of overdose victims and experts in the field.

The night will conclude with a Luminaria memorial ceremony.

International Overdose Awareness Day has been celebrated since 2001. Its goal is to reduce stigma and raise awareness of the frequency of overdose deaths.
