Jeremiah Smith starts against Akron

Jeremiah Smith came to Columbus as the best young player in his class and caused a lot of excitement during spring training and fall camp. And the hype is real. The true freshman will start the Buckeyes’ season opener against Akron on Saturday.

Our Kellyanne Stitts asked head coach Ryan Day what Smith showed in camp to earn a chance to start as a true freshman, and Day said it was his consistency, his physicality and his work ethic.

“He’s been consistent and hardworking since he got here, played strong and physical in the run game and was more mature for his age,” Day said. “He opted to play special teams when asked. I’m excited to see what he looks like on Saturday as he begins his career.”

Smith has already made program history: He was the first true freshman to receive the Iron Buckeye award and the freshman to shed his black stripe the fastest.

“It’s no secret that he has all the physical attributes you’d expect from a receiver. With his athletic ability, he can actually play any position on the field,” said Emeka Egbuka.

Smith is expected to line up alongside Egbuka and Carnell Tate. Jayden Ballard and Brandon Inniss will also likely be on the field against Akron.
