Earlier this season, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark broke Ticha Penicheiro’s long-standing record for rookie league assists. Now the No. 1 overall pick has her sights set on the all-time record for assists in a season, set just last season by Alyssa Thomas.

Clark has only been a pro for a few months, but has already established herself as the league’s most dynamic playmaker thanks to her pick-and-roll technique and brilliant transition skills. Her 8.1 assists per game are a league-best and the highest average ever for a rookie.

Clark collected another five assists in an 84-80 win over the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night. She now needs 65 assists to surpass Thomas, who had 316 assists last season. At her current pace, Clark would do that in the Fever’s final regular-season game on Sept. 19 against the Washington Mystics.

Assist record in one season

Clark has always been an incredible passer, but that aspect of her game was overshadowed by her long-range shooting in college. That hasn’t been the case in the WNBA. Clark is already the first rookie to record a triple-double, setting the all-time record with 19 assists in a game in a July 17 win over the Wings. She also holds the Fever’s single-season assist record and the WNBA’s rookie assist record.

Additionally, she has recorded at least 15 points and five assists in 22 games – the most in a season in league history. She is also on pace to become the first rookie and fourth player to average at least 15 points, five rebounds and five assists per game for an entire season.
