“My baby is hurting”; investigation into rape at Normandy High School underway

NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (First Alert 4) – The North County Police Cooperative confirmed to First Alert that it is investigating a sexual assault case at Normandy High School.

The victim’s mother told First Alert 4 that her daughter was attacked by a male student during school hours on Tuesday morning.

“She has to take HIV medication for 30 days just because they didn’t take care of my child,” says Shaniquik Shaw.

Shaw says the district did not inform her about the incident. The high school student said she was helping a classmate who claimed he was lost when the sexual assault occurred.

“She was trying to help him get to class and he pushed her down and took advantage of her situation,” Shaw says. “She said she screamed and there was no one there. No one in sight.”

Shaw says the district did not call her after the incident and refused to speak with her.

“She had to contact us herself and call us,” she says. “I contacted the superintendent today, but no one returned my calls. The caseworkers made contact, but no one returned my calls.”

First Alert 4 reached out to the district for comment and was referred to a statement the school’s principal sent to families Tuesday evening:

“School officials received information about an alleged inappropriate incident by one of our scholars toward another scholar. We took immediate action by following all established protocols, conducting interviews, and ensuring that the scholars and their families received appropriate support.”

“I don’t understand why there are no cameras on their route,” Shaw says, “if that’s the route all these kids take every day to get to school.”

In April, former Normandy middle school teacher Christopher Daniels was charged with rape of a minor and arrested after allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old student.

Shaw says these incidents are indicative of a deeper problem with schools in Normandy.

“Anything can happen to any child up here and they have no idea what’s going on,” Shaw said.
