Angry reaction to Atlanta airport’s tasteless tweet after two Delta employees killed by exploding tires

Atlanta International Airport is coming under fire after sharing a distasteful post on social media following the death of two Delta employees by an exploding tire.

Mirko Marweg, 58, and Luis Aldarondo, 37, were killed while disassembling wheel components for maintenance at Delta’s TechOps tire and maintenance facility near Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The airport’s post on the matter included Delta’s slogan, angering many social media users who found it inappropriate and disrespectful to the workers’ families.

“We extend our sincere condolences to our partners as they continue to ‘Keep Climb’ during this difficult time,” said a now-deleted X-post from the airport.

Social media users immediately responded to the airport’s post, expressing outrage at what they saw as a lack of sensitivity.

Steve Staeger said on X: “Oops. Two employees are dead. Maybe not the best time to start branding.”

Gabe Lugo, a communications expert, said, “Pro tip for PIOs (Public Information Officers): Don’t be a jerk. Using your company slogan when people have died is a WILD decision.”

Varun Solanski replied, “I’m sorry but it is highly inappropriate to put a slogan right next to the condolence message. If you are so lazy, at least a Chatgpt verification would have saved you.”

DailyMail.com has contacted Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport for comment on this story.

Marweg’s son Andre Coleman told the Atlanta news station that his father’s body was unrecognizable – and the family was relying on Marweg’s tattoos and a Mississippi state lanyard to identify him.

Marweg, who lived in Stone Mountain, Georgia, worked for Delta for more than 20 years and was planning to retire in a few months, according to 11Alive.

Social media users were quick to respond to the airport's post, expressing outrage at what they perceived as a lack of sensitivity.

Coleman said his father was a loving man who helped him change the oil on his motorcycle just on Sunday.

“That’s the kind of father he was. He was always there,” Coleman said.

Aldarondo, on the other hand, has a young son and daughter with his wife Sonia and is very close to his mother Juliet Perez.

Delta had previously stated that the wheel parts that were dismantled at the time of the explosion were not attached to an aircraft at the time.

The Federal Office for Occupational Safety and Health said it had launched an investigation. The cause of the explosion has not yet been disclosed.

The facility where the explosion occurred is part of Delta TechOps, which performs maintenance, repair and overhaul for Delta and more than 150 aviation and airline customers around the world.

John Laughter, president and chief of operations of Delta TechOps, said in a message to employees Tuesday morning that the tragedy was “heartbreaking for all of us.”

He said, “I am deeply saddened to announce that three members of the TechOps team were involved in an accident that occurred early this morning in Atlanta… Wheel & Brake Shop.”

“Please know that your safety and well-being always come first and that your leaders are there for you. Please continue to take good care of yourself and others.

“We are all in the same boat and we will get through this by supporting each other.”

Laughter said the necessary resources would remain on site to help, referring employees in need to human resources and offering 24/7 counseling services.

A statement from Delta Air Lines said: “The Delta family is heartbroken over the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility.”

“We have pledged our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

“The Delta family is grateful for the quick response of first responders and medical teams on the scene.”
