Eagles continue good start, beat Pioneers 9-0 – Morning Journal

Sometimes there are games you remember and games you erase from your memory.

Avon emerged victorious in its SWC opener on August 28 in Elyria, scoring eight goals in the first half and seven total goals to lead the Eagles to a 9-0 victory over the Pioneers.

The goals for Avon were scored by Skylar Kruszka (6th minute, 14th), Sierra Kobak (21st, 23rd), Paige Millet (7th), Laura Tindera (12th), Sydney Thomas (13th), Ella Graham (16th) and Blake Eddy (73rd). Thomas also contributed an assist to an overall successful performance.

“We really talked about how fast we can move the ball with a double touch, so I told the girls that we’re going to be moving the ball in the fifth or sixth game,” Avon coach Atilla Csiszar said. “It’s going to be a different team. We have so many diverse and dynamic players on this team. It’s going to be great to watch these girls play.”

The team has made a perfect 4-0 start to the season and recorded its first SWC win of the season away from home.

“This is the first 4-0 start to the season in a long time,” noted captain Skylar Kruszka. “Not only do we have extremely talented individual players, but we also work together as a team. We’re getting better and better as the season goes on. I’m really confident in what we can accomplish this season.”

After two goals in the sixth and seventh minutes, freshman Sydney Thomas gently played a cross to Laura Tindera, who slotted home a goal in the 12th minute. She returned a minute later, turned with the ball under control and hammered the ball into the net, making it 4-0 at the time – similar to the team’s overall record.

“It’s really just a matter of mindset – getting to the goal and trying to score as quickly as possible,” Thomas said of the recipe for the team’s good start in the first half. “Once you score a goal, you start scoring goals and just try to score as quickly as possible.”

Besides Kruszka, Sierra Kobak was the other multiple goal scorer for Avon. The team executed its game plan perfectly and gave Elyria little room to counterattack.

“We’ve definitely been working on one- and two-man passing and the speed of the game,” Kobak noted. “When we can get up, we score goals and move the ball faster. We’ve definitely learned how to distribute the ball well by working on that in practice and pushing each other, especially the defense, with our strong back line.”

“It helped us to get the ball in and into the goal more often.”

Elyria coach Alyssa Martineau praised the Eagles for their play.

“Avon is a great team,” Martineau said, adding that she is confident they will have a “great season.”

“We had no doubts that they would come here and outplay us. We can always learn something from them. That’s what we took from this game and are preparing for the next one.”
