Fever star Caitlin Clark breaks WNBA rookie 3-point record in 84-80 win over the Sun

Caitlin Clark set another WNBA record on Wednesday night in Indianapolis.

The Fever star sank a three-pointer early in Indiana’s game against the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday, officially breaking a tie with Rhyne Howard and setting Clark’s league rookie three-point record. Clark has now made 86 shots from behind the three-point line this season, surpassing the 85 Howard made during her rookie season in 2022.

Just three minutes into the first quarter, Clark scored the milestone with a step-back three-pointer over Sun guard DiJonai Carrington.

Clark scored 19 points in Wednesday’s game, making 3 of 12 three-pointers and 7 of 17 field shots. The game was exciting right up until the end, and the Indiana Fever took an 82-80 lead in the final minutes on a layup by Clark. The Fever eventually won 84-80.

On Monday night, Clark hit four three-pointers in the Fever’s 84-79 win over the Atlanta Dream. She also tied the record in that win at Georgia with a step-back three-pointer in the fourth quarter, which she actually hit over Howard.

Clark entered Wednesday averaging 18 points and 8.2 assists per game this season. She averaged 2.8 3-pointers per game, which ranks fourth among WNBA bests. The former Iowa star also became the fastest player in league history to score 500 points and 200 assists earlier this month, something no rookie has ever accomplished before.

Clark made nearly 38% of her three-pointers during her career with the Hawkeyes. She became the all-time leading NCAA shooter in men’s and women’s basketball and led the team to back-to-back national championship games. She averaged a career-high 5.2 three-pointers in her final season.

The Fever entered their match against the Sun with a 14-16 record, although they have won five of their last seven games to remain in the playoff race. Their win over the Dream also marked the first time the team has won 14 games in a single season since 2016. The Fever are in seventh place in the league standings.
