Caitlin Clark sets WNBA rookie 3-point record in a season

Caitlin Clark owns another record.

The Indiana Fever superstar set a new WNBA rookie record for 3-pointers made by sinking her 86th three-pointer of the season, surpassing the previous high of 85 set by Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream in 2022.

The record-breaking shot came early in the first quarter of Wednesday’s game between the Fever and the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, when Clark sank a stepback three-pointer with 7:17 left in the first quarter.

It was the only 3-point shot Clark made in the first quarter.

Clark set the record Monday night with a 19-point score against Atlanta in front of a Dream franchise record crowd at State Farm Arena.

With her 86 three-pointers made this season, she is getting closer to the WNBA single-season record of 128, set just last season by New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu.

Ionescu surpassed Diana Taurasi’s record from 2006, when she scored 121 points.

“It’s an honor any time you can pass arguably the best women’s basketball player who has ever played in the WNBA,” Ionescu told reporters after surpassing Taurasi’s record, according to ESPN.

With his rookie record under his belt, outsiders’ attention is focused on the single-season 3-point record and whether it is achievable.

After Wednesday night, the Fever had only played nine games in the regular season, with Clark averaging 2.8 three-point shots per game prior to Wednesday’s game.

Clark has averaged 3.5 three-pointers per game in her last four games prior to Wednesday.

All this happened after Clark set the Division I record for most points in a college basketball career (both men’s and women’s).

The Fever entered the evening with a 6-4 record in their last ten games and were in seventh place in the WNBA standings with a record of 14-16.
