GBI called in due to police-involved shooting

GBI called in due to police-involved shooting

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in after a Flemington man was shot in a police-involved shooting Wednesday morning.

Liberty County Sheriff Will Bowman confirmed that his officers were dispatched to a residence on Old Hines Road around 9:30 a.m. after 911 received a call about a domestic situation. Officers who arrived on the scene tackled the offender twice, Sheriff Bowman said, shooting him the second time.

“As a result, our guys were involved in an officer-involved shooting,” the sheriff said. “The suspect is in our care at the hospital. We are awaiting assistance from the GBI.”

The suspect, whose name was not released, died at Liberty Regional Medical Center, county coroner Reginald Pierce confirmed.

Sheriff Bowman also said there is no further threat to the community and no officers were injured in the incident.

“We just want to pray for the family and our officers who responded and did a great job,” the sheriff said. “We’re trying to make sure our citizens are safe in Liberty County. The county should be happy that we have good officers who went out today and did their jobs.”

Sheriff Bowman said he could not say whether the suspect pointed a weapon at officers. Any such incident will be part of the GBI’s investigation.
