Another setback for electric cars: General Motors postpones start date for battery factory in Indiana

General Motors is postponing the opening of a planned battery factory in Indiana by a year, signaling a further retreat from electric mobility as automakers struggle with weaker-than-expected consumer demand.

The news was announced on Tuesday when the automaker announced its joint venture with Samsung SDI to invest $3.5 billion in a battery factory that is expected to begin production in 2027. However, the company said last year the partnership was aiming for mass production in 2026.

General Motors isn’t the only automaker canceling or delaying launch dates to serve the current electric vehicle market. Just last week, Ford canceled plans to introduce a three-row electric SUV and a new electric pickup truck, replacing the models with hybrid cars instead.

“The electric vehicle market and GM’s revenue will continue to grow as more customers try our electric vehicles, charging infrastructure expands and we expand into additional segments,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in a written statement.

General Motors has shelved plans for a new Buick electric vehicle and delayed the opening of an electric truck factory.

General Motors has announced plans to produce at least 200,000 electric vehicles this year, but the company has already sold about 38,000 of them to dealers in the first half of 2024.
