Game-deciding mistake forces Star Wars Outlaws players to start over

Star Wars OutlawsUbisoft’s big game set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away doesn’t technically come out until later this week, but anyone who paid $110 for early access or has a subscription to Ubisoft+ had the chance to start playing on Tuesday. However, due to a game-breaking bug, some PS5 players are being asked to restart their game.

Outlaws Players on PS5 received an email on Tuesday informing them of the game’s latest update, patch 1.000.002. The message told players they may need to restart their games from the beginning to avoid further issues.

Here is the email as first seen by IGN:

To ensure the best experience of the Outer Rim, we have performed maintenance to ensure everyone is playing the latest version of the game. Since you are one of the affected players who had access to an older version of the game, we realize that you may be encountering some issues following this latest patch. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused… After confirming that you have the latest version, please start a new save to fully enjoy Star Wars Outlaws as our team intended. Unfortunately, if you continue with a previous save, you will encounter issues and progress blockers.

It’s unclear what bugs this patch will fix, as players on Reddit have encountered various issues while playing the game. One player noticed that they were unable to land on the planet Toshara after a mission in space. According to Reddit threads, it seems that the console versions have more of these issues than the PC version. As someone who is playing through the game myself, I’ve only encountered minor bugs and graphical issues, but nothing that would require a restart.

As for the game itself, Outlaws stands at 76% on OpenCritic, and io9’s review praised the game for creating a game where you can be a real villain, using wits and skill instead of lightsaber and force. Players take on the role of Kay Vess, a wannabe smuggler in the galactic underworld. She falls victim to a double-cross and now has a target on her back. Players must lie, cheat, and steal from the biggest crime syndicates in the galaxy: the Hutts, Crimson Dawn, and the Pykes.
