Man reportedly shot by Asheville police identified, investigation ongoing

A man who was reportedly shot by Asheville police on August 27 has been identified.

According to an Aug. 28 news release from Asheville Police, Chad Owen Herman, 58, of Asheville died after he was reportedly shot by an Asheville police officer following an incident on Chatham Road. Police told News 13 that Herman pointed his rifle at officers before officers shot him.

APD said that on August 27 at around 5 p.m., several people called 911 to report a man pointing a rifle at them. The same man also attacked a City of Asheville contract worker with a shovel, according to APD. Asheville police said in the August 28 news release that the City of Asheville contract worker was treated at Mission Hospital, was released and is now recovering at home.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is currently conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Once that is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office in accordance with established protocols, the release said.
