Many bands claim that they “defy categorization,” and those who make it their business to say such things over and over again usually fit easily and obviously into a genre, or can be summed up in a tried and tested, ready-made soundbite. So I guess any band that requires a whole host of terms and sonic labels, qualifiers and suffixes to adequately describe is as close to defying a genre as you can get. With that in mind, I’d like to introduce you to the kaleidoscopic-shoegazing, krautrock, post-punk, alt-rock-driven, ambient-yet-cavernous, proto-psychedelic sounds of Infinite free fall. And don’t tell me that comes easily to the lips.

The title “Desecrated Landscape”, the latest work of this Based in Charleston Vehicle for Maxton Stenstrom’s The vivid sonic imagination in some ways sums up the band’s approach to music. If the creative playing field of music makers of the past was one of compartmentalization and organization, tribalism and strict rules, then this is the sound of a band running amok, crossing boundaries, overturning the usual apple carts and generally plundering the place for whatever shiny sonic things pop into their heads.

Here, Infinitefreefall pushes alt-rock guitars through a shoegaze filter, creating walls of noise made up of chiming and shimmering volleys. They drive such six-string soundscapes over pulsing basslines and thumping drums, then weave synthetic sounds throughout, smoothing the edges and adding digital intrigue.

Somewhere between alternative and post-rock, between atmosphere and edginess, between indie and industrial, between (shockingly good) and (somewhat) impressive you will find Infinitefreefall.

It must be a lonely life, being so far away from the crowd.
