Can YouTube videos fix water-damaged iPhones? THIS new research gives the answer

There’s a new solution for iPhones that have been hit by water that’s gaining traction, according to recent research from David Pierce of The Verge and the repair experts at iFixit. These methods involve playing certain YouTube videos that emit low-frequency sounds designed to vibrate the water from the speakers of soaked smartphones.

Intrigued by claims in numerous YouTube videos that you can remove water from an iPhone using clay, Pierce decided to work with iFixit to put those claims to the test. The experiment involved submerging an iPhone 13 in water treated with UV dye and then playing one of these special videos. After leaving the device overnight to dry, the results were eye-opening.

According to reports, the sound waves generated in the video actually pushed water out of the ‌iPhone‌’s speaker, as well as the speakers of other smartphones from brands like Google and Nokia that were also tested. The initial burst of sound was particularly effective at removing water from the speaker area.

However, it is important to note that this method was only able to remove the water from the speaker grill. When the iPhone was later disassembled, UV dye showed that water had been in other parts of the device. This suggests that the sound-based method does not provide a comprehensive solution to completely dry a water-soaked phone.

Interestingly, Apple has already integrated a similar feature into its Apple Watch, which uses sound to expel water from the device. This method is more efficient on the Apple Watch, probably due to its smaller size and fewer internal crevices compared to an ‌iPhone‌.

While modern iPhones, including the upcoming iPhone 15, are IP68 rated, meaning they can be submerged in up to six meters of water for 30 minutes, it’s important to remember that water resistance may deteriorate over time. Water damage is not covered by Apple’s warranty, so it’s advisable to avoid exposing your iPhone to water if possible.

This sound-based technology is a promising solution for anyone struggling with soaked iPhone speakers, but it shouldn’t be relied upon for major water damage.
