2 TB SSD, reinforced PS5 Pro consumes only about 200 W of power

2 TB SSD, reinforced PS5 Pro consumes only about 200 W of power

Not only was Sony’s upgraded PlayStation 5 Pro an open secret last week at Gamescom 2024, but now rumors are rife that it will feature upgraded 2TB Gen4 SSD storage and consume around 200W of power.

The new PS5 Pro info comes from leaker Moore’s Law is Dead, who said one of his sources recently saw the PlayStation 5 Pro dev kit and that it comes with 2TB of SSD storage. Microsoft just launched its new Xbox Series X 2TB console, so it makes sense that Sony would push for the same 2TB here (and with a far more powerful console in the PS5 Pro).

Sony’s new PlayStation 5 Pro Dev Kit also runs quietly and cool. Since the PS5 Pro shares the same power connector as the standard PS5, power consumption is identical. AMD’s new semi-custom SoC, codenamed “Viola,” runs well on TSMC’s new node, maintaining the same (sometimes lower) performance and lower temperatures as the standard PS5, while the PS5 Pro has significantly more power… Sony will have another winner on its hands.

Sony’s new PlayStation 5 Pro console was an “open secret” at Gamescom 2024 in Cologne last week, and with the Tokyo Game Show 2024 right around the corner, a possible State of Play presentation, and the holidays approaching… Sony is going to make quite a stir with the PS5 Pro.

We have heard rumors that Sony unveils its new PS5 Pro at the Tokyo Games Show in September, so it is only a few weeks away.

A summary of what to expect from the PlayStation 5 Pro console based on recent rumors:

  • PS5 Pro runs cool and quiet, approx. 200 W power: According to recent rumors, the PS5 Pro will consume around 200W of power, share the same power connector as the standard PS5, and run cooler thanks to optimizations from AMD and TSMC’s improved process node on the Viola SoC inside the PS5 Pro.
  • 45% faster than the standard PS5: The new SoC, codenamed Trinity, is a souped-up semi-custom design from AMD with a larger GPU and faster GDDR6 memory. The GPU’s higher clock speeds and some RDNA 4 technologies will provide a huge performance boost over the regular PS5.
  • 2-3x faster at ray tracing than the standard PS5: A 45% performance increase over the standard PS5 is impressive, but the new RDNA 4 GPU tricks in the PS5 Pro are said to deliver an incredible 2x-3x performance increase for new “PS5 Pro Enhanced” games on a PlayStation 5 Pro console.
  • AI-powered upscaling technology for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR): The new PS5 Pro console will (of course) feature AI technology powering an exciting new AI upscaling technology: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution – or PSSR – which means that with the PS5 Pro we will see some of the best graphics we’ve seen on a console to date.
  • PS5 Pro Improved label for games: Sony will have a new “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label for games that will pair games with PSSR to upscale the resolution to 4K and a consistent 60 FPS, and then add or enhance ray tracing effects and performance.
