Soccer victories, sold-out football games, women’s basketball schedule

In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, the men’s soccer team returned to the field, the women’s basketball team released its non-league schedule, the football team announced another sold-out home game, and the baseball team received a commitment.

The men’s soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 2-0 win over UNC Asheville in a non-league game at Thompson Field. Ethan Hackenberg opened the scoring for the Hokies with a penalty kick in the first half, then early in the second half Malick Thiaw doubled the lead with a nice chip shot on a solo effort.

Virginia Tech returns to action on the road at Kentucky on Labor Day night.

The women’s basketball team released its non-league schedule on Tuesday. There were a few leaks leading up to the full announcement, but the entire schedule has been released. They will open the season at home against UNC Wilmington on Nov. 4 before heading to Charlotte for the Ally Tipoff against Iowa on Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m., which will be broadcast on ESPN2.

The remaining non-conference home games are against UNC Asheville (November 13), Coppin State (November 16), Rutgers (November 19), Elon (November 23), Radford (December 15) and Campbell (December 21). Road games are at the Fort Myers Tip-Off against Davidson and then either Michigan or Belmont, and at Georgia on December 4 as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.

Virginia Tech announced that their October 26 home game against Georgia Tech is sold out. It will be the homecoming game, and after the Yellow Jackets beat Florida State on Saturday, the Hokies will need to turn things up that day at Lane Stadium.

Brady Elrod, an outfielder and pitcher in the class of 2026, announced his commitment through Virginia Tech baseball coach John Szefc.
