Reedsburg football player involved in harassment of Amish

Reedsburg football players were among those charged with harassing members of the Amish community, the school district confirmed Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister detailed the teens’ alleged actions, which included honking horns and flashing lights in front of homes, ringing doorbells and knocking on windows after dark. Nine teens were charged with disturbing the peace.

Sauk County officers increased patrol activity in the western part of the county after receiving numerous reports of harassing behavior, primarily occurring between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. On Aug. 11 at 10:19 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop and encountered several juveniles associated with the reported behavior. Officers “determined that these juveniles were part of a larger group that had been behaving in this manner,” Meister said.

Interviews conducted over the following days revealed that nine people were involved in the incidents.

Kari Stanek, communications and media specialist for the Reedsburg School District, confirmed Tuesday that the district had canceled the first two college football games in response to the investigation.

“Not all students involved in the football program were involved in these incidents,” she said.

Stanek said the district cannot comment on student disciplinary matters, but added that the alleged incidents did not occur on district property or during district activities.

“The district is limited in its authority to discipline students for conduct that occurs entirely outside of district property, programs and activities,” she said. “Generally speaking, the district has the legal right to impose discipline within the athletic program, but not through suspension or expulsion from school.”

Both Stanek and Meister warned against misinformation spreading on social media.

“The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is aware of numerous other behaviors that are rumored to have occurred,” Meister said. “Officers have investigated these reports and at this time have determined they are unsubstantiated.”

Reedsburg canceled its first two college football games of the season the night before the scheduled season opener. River Valley had no opponent for Week 1 and DeForest had difficulty finding a new opponent. It attempted to play the lower division games as scheduled.
