VIDEO: SpaceX Falcon 9 booster tips over on landing and catches fire after nighttime launch from Florida

The rocket stage of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket tipped over and caught fire as it landed on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean following a launch from Florida early Wednesday morning.

The rocket launched at 3:48 a.m. from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, carrying 21 Starlink satellites — including 13 with direct-to-cell capabilities — into low Earth orbit.

After launch, however, “the first stage of the Falcon 9 tipped over after landing on the drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas,” SpaceX explained in an update to X.

The teams are currently reviewing the flight data and the status of the booster.

This mission was the 23rd flight of the first stage booster, which has previously launched GPS III Space Vehicle 04, GPS III Space Vehicle 05, Inspiration4, Ax-1, Nilesat 301, OneWeb Launch 17, ARABSAT BADR-8 and now 16 Starlink missions.

SpaceX had planned a second launch of Starlink satellites for Wednesday evening, but decided to cancel it to give its team time to review the boosters’ landing data. A new launch date was not immediately announced.
