Surveillance footage helps investigation into Put-in-Bay attack

PUT-IN-BAY – Recently discovered video surveillance footage of an assault outside the Frosty Bar could be the key to solving the case.

At 12:11 a.m. on Friday, Put-in-Bay Police received a 911 call. An Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputy found an unconscious man in what is known as Commodore Alley between Catawba and Loraine Avenues, near the back of a bar.

The call log states that Put-in-Bay officers found a man lying on the ground. He told officers he was a musician and had been playing at Frosty’s. He did not know what happened after he left. Due to a head bleed, the man was taken by rescue helicopter to a hospital in Toledo.

Later that same day, the victim returned to the Put-in-Bay Police Station to file a report.

Police Lt. Col. David Fenstermaker said the case remains under investigation. He confirmed social media reports that the victim suffered a concussion and a fractured vertebra and may need minor surgery for a laceration to his head.

Police search for suspect

“I may have a possible suspect. I’m trying to follow up on it. I just don’t have a name yet,” Fenstermaker said. “I hope someone comes forward because we don’t have a name yet.”

Police requested surveillance camera footage. Fenstermaker said a camera in the area has been out of order since 2023.

“He was attacked somewhere between the back patio (at Frosty’s) and the Commodore,” Fenstermaker said. “It would help if everyone here had cameras. We tell them every year to get good cameras because that would help them.”

Police have a basic description of the incident and the suspect who may have committed the attack.

Fenstermaker said there was a verbal altercation between several people in the bar based on allegations that the victim may have inappropriately touched a woman.

Description of the man police are looking for

The suspect is described as an older man, mid-40s to mid-60s, approximately 6′ tall and stocky, with short spiky hair and a possible tattoo on his upper right arm. He was wearing greenish-gray shorts, sandals, and a black short-sleeved shirt with a red American flag on the right sleeve and a snake logo that read “Don’t Tread on Me” on the back. The man may have been accompanied by several younger women.

Fenstermaker said the man paid in cash but may have used a credit card in other stores.

Put-in-Bay Police are asking the public for information regarding the identities of those involved in the attack.
