Take a bow, Naomi Osaka! Tennis star explains her US Open outfit

Tennis star Naomi Osaka was lavishly dressed at the US Open.

The four-time Grand Slam champion warmed up for her first-round match in a white top with an oversized bow and a green ruffled skirt.

The 26-year-old donned a more practical outfit for the game, but still showed off bows on her skirt and sneakers.

The fashion choice proved to be an inspiration, as Osaka defeated 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2.

Osaka, who won the US Open in 2018 and 2022 but missed last year’s tournament after the birth of her daughter, explained why she chose such a daring outfit.

“Well, I chose the color at least a year ago,” Osaka said. “I definitely love being involved in everything I do, whether it’s fashion or anything else. But I feel like it gives me, I would say, a different kind of strength to be able to be part of my tennis outfits.”

“I especially find the outfits at the US Open a bit more extravagant. When I put on my outfit today, I thought: ‘Ah, I hope this isn’t too much!'”

“Because I was wearing the tutu and the jacket with the bow and it was green, I felt like everyone was staring at me weirdly. And then I put the headphones on, it was really awesome.”

“I was like, you know what, do this maximalist style. And then I was feeling better, another player came up to me and asked if he could take a photo. I hope it was a positive photo, not like I was like, ‘Oh my God, look at her.’ Yeah, I think when I put the outfit on, it’s almost like a super suit for me, so I’m trying to channel that.” Meanwhile, Britain’s Dan Evans pulled off an amazing comeback to win the longest match in US Open history by beating Russia’s Karen Khachanov in five hours and 35 minutes.

“I have a terrible headache now. It was an amazing game. I just want to go to bed,” he said afterwards.

Fellow Brits Katie Boulter and Jack Draper also won and made it to the second round, but Emma Raducanu, who unexpectedly won the title in 2021 as a teenage qualifier, was eliminated.
