Death after CO2 leak at Hai Long substation

At least one death has occurred following a gas leak at the onshore substation of the 1 GW Hai Long offshore wind farm in Taiwan on August 20.

Taiwan: It was confirmed by Hai Long Offshore Wind that there was at least one death following a gas leak on August 20. Onshore substation for the 1GW Hai Long offshore wind farm in TaiwanHai Long released a statement saying: “We extend our sincere condolences to all those injured and their families and express our deepest sorrow for the loss of life.” The company added that it would provide the families with necessary support.

According to the company and its onshore substation contractor TECO Electrical & Machinery will continue to cooperate actively with the relevant authorities and judicial bodies in conducting a comprehensive investigation.

As a reminder, on August 20, 17 workers were affected and several were hospitalized after what was believed to be a leak in a carbon dioxide cylinder. The details of the incident are still being investigated, but preliminary information suggests a carbon dioxide leak from the fire extinguishing system.
