Severe weather warning issued for entire Chicago metropolitan area – NBC Chicago

The National Weather Service issued a severe weather warning for the entire Chicago area on Thursday morning; however, the warning was lifted in several counties before it expired at 11 p.m.

A severe weather warning remains in effect for LaSalle, Grundy, Will and Kankakee counties. The warning area also includes Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana.

Surveillance has been lifted in several Chicago-area counties, including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, DeKalb and McHenry counties.

Due to strong winds, trains on the Metra UP-NW line between Palatine and Fox River Grove and the UP-N line between Braeside and Great Lakes were halted during the storms, officials said.

Previous warnings in McHenry and Lake counties were canceled, although gusts of up to 70 mph were reported in the area.

The storms occurred at the end of a sweltering heat wave that brought the highest temperatures of the year to the Chicago area.

At O’Hare International Airport, high temperatures reached 99 degrees on Tuesday, with the heat index exceeding 115 degrees.
