Starting Pitcher Chart – August 28, 2024

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

We haven’t really seen Skenes limited, so he’s still a full-fledged starter.

Bibee’s 2.86 ERA since May 13 is the 7th best, just behind Wheeler and Ragans 2.85 and Skubal 2.83 over the same time period. I only mention this because there was some concern about Bibee because of his 4.91 ERA in the 8 starts prior to that, despite a solid 18% K-BB. The 1.3 HR9 was a big problem and he has reduced it to 0.9 during his current 17-start run.

Musgrove and E-Rod have shown themselves to be much more like themselves in their last three starts and I’ve put them back in the lineup everywhere without incident. That doesn’t mean they’re risk-free or anything, just that I trust them again at a level that matches their name value.

Arrighetti seems to have turned things around with his 7 shutout IP against COL, posting a 3.53 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 24% K-BB in 58.7 IP after having a rough 6.36 ERA in his first 13 starts, including two 7 ER starts.

TOR’s recent offensive push has me hesitant about mid-range weapons. I’m perfectly willing to use Bello, but I won’t rush into it.

I consider myself pretty open to extreme runs on both ends from almost any player in a given month, but I can’t imagine how many bold predictions I would have had to go through to arrive at Bido, who is posting a 1.17 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and 16% K-BB in his L4 starts (23 IP). And yet here we are! I can see starting him in 10s in the right context, but in Cincy, it’s not a must.

Leiter returns to the majors with the best possible matchup and has fared much better in the minors recently, highlighted by 44 Ks in his last 28 IP.

I don’t trust Buehler much in good matchups right now, so I certainly won’t use him against BAL.

If you have any questions, I’ll be chatting today (Wednesday) at 1pm CT!

Recommendations for Roto 5×5 Leagues

The table includes their 2024 stats (these were changed from last year’s stats on April 22), their opponent’s wOBA rank compared to the pitcher’s handedness from this year to now (this was changed on April 11) and for the last 30 days, my general start/sit recommendation for leagues with 10, 12, and 15 (or more) teams, and then a note on that. Of course, there are more league sizes than those three, so it’s essentially a shallow, mid, and deep. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15 teams, that doesn’t mean he can’t be used in 10s and 12s, it just means it’s a riskier stream the more shallow the league gets.

These are general recommendations, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you’re protecting ratios or chasing counts. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues, so I thought it would make more sense to focus on roto, and that you can then expand on these recommendations a bit for points leagues in general.
