Telegram Messenger records sharp increase in downloads after arrest of founder Pavel Durov

According to TechCrunch, the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov has led to a significant increase in downloads of the popular messaging app.

On August 26, Telegram’s global downloads on iOS increased by 4% compared to the previous day. In France, where Durov was imprisoned, Telegram is the top-ranked social networking app in the App Store and ranks 3rd in the overall application rankings.

The App Store’s ranking system combines app installs, download speed, and other metrics. In the US, Telegram moved up to 3rd place in the Social Networking category on August 26, and saw a significant rise over the weekend, from 18th to 8th place in the overall App Store rankings.

According to Appfigures, this is Telegram’s highest ranking on the platform since at least January 1, 2023.

Pavel Durov was arrested at Le Bourget airport on August 24 while traveling from Azerbaijan to Paris on a private plane. He is accused of failing to cooperate with French authorities in relation to cyber and financial crimes related to Telegram.

Durov is currently under investigation by the French National Cybercrime and Anti-Fraud Office and remains in custody.
