Wahiawa youth sports team receives much-needed donation after devastating fire

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Just in time for the new season, members of the Wahiawa United Football Club received a much-needed donation.

Earlier this month, all of the youth program’s equipment was destroyed in a fire at Wahiawa District Park. On Tuesday, the organization received a check for $10,000 presented by the Downtown Athletic Club along with State Senator Donovan Dela Cruz.

The money will be used to replace some of the remaining items.

One of the club’s leaders and coaches is former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz. He says they’ve been coping as best they can since the fire.

“Right now we’re putting out slippers instead of skittles – we’re just making sure something happens. That’s going to be a big help,” he said. “We would have made it happen. We would have found ways to make it happen, but with the help it’s just so much better. It makes it so much easier and it definitely adds value to the program.”

Donations like these demonstrate the community’s support for such programs.

“It shows that we are not trying to do it alone and that other people are also taking care of the children,” Moniz added.

State Senator Donovan Dela Cruz said, “We just want to make sure they can continue on their path to success, learn teamwork and do something productive.”

In addition to the monetary donation, ILWU also donated a shipping container to house the new equipment.
