Clemson Gameday Guide – Football — Official Athletics Site of the Clemson Tigers

PREVIEW

Clemson will open its 2024 season in the national spotlight on Saturday, Aug. 31, when the No. 14 Tigers face the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta. Kickoff at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled for noon ET. It will be the only meeting of two AP Top 15 teams over the weekend.

Saturday’s contest will feature two of only three active head coaches to win an FBS national championship: Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Georgia’s Kirby Smart will enter the 2024 season as part of that trio alongside North Carolina’s Mack Brown. Swinney and Smart are the only active coaches in the country to have won multiple FBS national championships, and they are the only coaches to have won a national championship with their current programs.

An unexpected win by Clemson on Saturday would mark just the sixth time in AP Poll history (which dates back to 1936) that a team has defeated the preseason (and active) No. 1 AP Poll team in the top-ranked team’s season opener.

WHAT TO CONSIDER THIS SEASON

– Clemson (798-472-45) needs two more wins to become the first ACC team to reach 800 wins in history. Across all conferences, 12 teams have reached that mark, and Clemson (798) and Auburn (799) can reach 800 early this season.

– Clemson is attempting to become the first team to win 22 ACC titles. Since Clemson helped found the conference in 1953, the team leads the ACC with 21 all-time titles, including 20 solo titles.

– Clemson (6) is trying to become only the second team to secure seven College Football Playoff spots (Alabama, 8) since the postseason format was introduced in 2014.
